The Spanish vapor “Federico” navigates between Barcelona, that it left on October 8th, 1914, and Genoa. Two days later, she is intercepted by the torpedo boat 360 of the French navy. She is diverted towards the port of Toulon.
Approximately 150 of her passengers are interned, most of them transit in the fort of St Nicholas in Marseille, Casabianda in Corsica and Uzès, in the Gard, before arriving in Ile Longue on August 22nd, 1916.
Some German passengers benefit from a safe-conduct supplied by the French Embassy in Madrid, which avoids them the internment: His Excellency Otto von Saldera Aklimb, retired general (71 years) as well as 7 consular agents working in South Africa or in Zanzibar.
